The Concept
These two events will closely reflect the philosophy of FuseArts in encouraging the interaction and fusion of elements of different artistic/creative nature in the development of new works of art.

The Southwark Music Charts will be the outcome of a unique collaboration of individual artists who will come together to musically map the borough of Southwark with new compositions written by contemporary, classically trained composers in response to this inner-city landscape. The composers, coming from various cultural/ethnic backgrounds, have been asked to write a piece of music in response to a series of walks in Southwark. The interaction with the environment will necessarily be different in each case and it is hoped that each of the composers will offer a unique approach. The aim for the resulting “musical map” is not to offer an “objective” musical response to the environment – instead, the walks will be seen through the individual prism of each composer and as such will be reflected in the resulting pieces. In other words, this is no definitive musical map, but one that, we hope, might inspire other musicians to offer their own take on “musical mapping” – the creative possibilities within such interactions are endless …

The Goin’ Home Music Project will explore the idea of fusion in a different way. During a series of workshops, professional musicians will interact with students in the creation of new music. But the flow of creative information will again be in both directions. The title, borrowed from the spiritual based on the English horn theme from the Largo of Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony, does not only encompass the return to home and an end to one’s cares (as in the text of the spiritual), but also implies the initial departure; in other words, again, the inevitable relationship between the home and the away, the inside and the outside, the individual and the environment …

The exact nature of creative communication in both these events has not been prescribed or defined, as we would like each musician to feel free to explore the relationship in a way most inspiring to him/herself. Finally, the environments we are describing, while rich in interactive possibilities, do not guarantee a “better” or “more valid” outcome – we are only highlighting some of the aspects that might manifest in the creative development underlying these two events. But in any creative process, many other such aspects can be explored in a spontaneous (and unconscious) way, in ever-changing and infinitely new directions …
